I took huge financial risks to enter filmmaking – AY Makun

Comedian and filmmaker Ayo Makun has said his decision to move into film production required major financial commitment and personal risk.

AY spoke after receiving the trailblazer award at the Silverbird Man of the Year Awards. He described the recognition as validation for years of work across comedy, filmmaking and live entertainment.

“It is deeply humbling. This award validates years of risk taking, innovation and consistency. Being recognised as a trailblazer tells me that daring to expand beyond comedy into filmmaking and live entertainment was worth it. It is not a destination for me; it is motivation to keep raising the bar,” he said.

Over the years, AY has built a career that spans stand up comedy, film production and large scale entertainment events. His work in Nollywood has contributed to the wider global visibility of Nigerian films.

Advising young creatives, he stressed the need for discipline and understanding the business side of entertainment.

“Build capacity before chasing applause. Talent is not enough. Learn the business, stay disciplined, remain consistent and never rely on shortcuts. Nigeria is challenging, but it rewards resilience and structure,” he said.

AY also recalled that his entry into filmmaking came with doubts and heavy financial commitments.

“Transitioning into film production was a major risk. There were doubts and heavy financial commitments. But I believed in growth beyond stand-up comedy. I studied the market, built strong partnerships and stayed persistent. That decision expanded my brand globally,” he said.

Speaking on his next steps, he said, “Expansion and legacy. AY Live is coming up on Easter Sunday, April 5, and the brand is growing internationally too. I am developing new film and digital projects aimed at strengthening Nollywood’s global presence. I am also focused on expanding The AY’s Open Mic Comedy Challenge platforms that support young creatives.”

He added, “There are many brilliant talents across Africa and the Diaspora. Collaboration is about timing and alignment. When vision and structure meet at the right time, great things happen.”

AY is widely known for producing and starring in box office films such as 30 Days in Atlanta. He has also produced movies like A Trip to Jamaica, Merry Men: The Real Yoruba Demons and its sequel.
