Singer Tiwa Savage has opened up about how childbirth affected her career and mental state at the time.
Speaking during an interview with content creator Korty EO, the award winning artist said she felt becoming a mother slowed down her career and changed how the industry viewed her.
“I thought my career was over after childbirth,” Savage said.
The 45-year-old explained that the physical changes she experienced after giving birth affected her confidence and work opportunities. She recalled losing a major endorsement deal because her body had changed.
“I felt like giving birth destroyed my career,” she said.
Tiwa also spoke about her emotional struggles after welcoming her son, Jamil. She admitted that she did not immediately bond with him and felt overwhelmed in her first years of motherhood.
“I didn’t bond with my son for the first year or two,” she said.
The music star added that she had always hoped for a girl and cried when she was told she was having a boy.
Tiwa welcomed her son in 2015 with her former husband Tunji Balogun, popularly known as TeeBillz. The couple later separated but continue to co parent.
She said her perspective has changed over the years and now describes her son as her closest companion.
“He’s my best friend now,” she said.
Tiwa also noted that motherhood has shaped how she teaches her son about respect and responsibility, especially towards women.
Tiwa Savage remains one of Nigeria’s most successful music exports, with a career spanning over a decade. She has released several albums, toured internationally and continues to perform while raising her son as a single mother.
