Media mogul and politician Dele Momodu has expressed solidarity with former Sokoto State governor Aminu Tambuwal following his detention by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged fraudulent cash withdrawals totalling N189 billion.
Mr Tambuwal arrived at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja around 11:30 a.m. on Monday for questioning and was still facing interrogators as of Monday evening.
A source at the commission said the alleged withdrawals breached the Money Laundering (Prevention & Prohibition) Act, 2022, though the exact period of the transactions remains unclear.
EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale declined to comment.
Reacting to the development in an Instagram post on Monday night, Momodu quoted poet Walt Whitman, urging Tambuwal not to “weep” and assuring him that “the ravening clouds shall not long be victorious.”
Momodu said he stood with Tambuwal the same way he stood with President Bola Tinubu during his Code of Conduct Tribunal trial, adding that there should be no place for political intimidation in a democracy.
“This too shall pass and the hunter may become the hunted,” Momodu wrote.
Tambuwal, a former speaker of the House of Representatives (2011–2015), governed Sokoto State from 2015 to 2023, returning to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2019 general elections.
He currently represents Sokoto South in the Senate and is a key opposition figure in the ADC coalition seeking to challenge President Tinubu in 2027.
The EFCC maintains that the withdrawals under Tambuwal’s watch violated federal anti-money laundering laws.
