I spend N40,000 daily for electricity – Pete Edochie

Veteran actor Pete Edochie has spoken about the challenges of electricity supply in Nigeria, revealing that he spends about N40,000 every day to keep power running in his home.

The 78‑year‑old made the remarks during an interview on African Independent Television (AIT), highlighting the costs of relying on both the national grid and private generators.

“I spend about N10,000 every day buying electricity units. Then I spend N20,000 on diesel to power the generator and another N10,000 on petrol for a smaller generator,” Edochie said.

“That brings the total to N40,000 daily just to provide electricity in my house.”

Pete described the situation as worrying and reflective of broader hardships faced by many Nigerians. “It disturbs me a big deal,” he said. “Then I listen to people who are only interested in getting into politics and enjoying power. Nobody seems to be bothered about what’s happening to the common man.”

Pete Edochie is one of Nigeria’s respected actors, known for his roles as elders, chiefs and authority figures in film and television. He first rose to prominence in the 1980s with his portrayal of Okonkwo in the Nigerian Television Authority adaptation of Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart, a performance that earned him national and international recognition.
