I regret not signing Simi, Teni, Falz, others – Don Jazzy

Mavin Records boss Don Jazzy has revealed that he regrets not signing singers Simi, Teni, Davido and rapper Falz when he had the opportunity.

The music executive made the disclosure in an interview with content creator Fisayo Fosudo, where he reflected on some of the missed opportunities in his career.

He said: “I like Simi, I didn’t sign her. I like Teni, I didn’t sign her. I had the opportunity of signing Davido, but I didn’t because I kind of figured that he would be fine. He had a rich family background. I also didn’t sign Falz. I don’t know, I think I was just being dumb.”

He added that he would have loved to sign Wizkid too but Banky W got to him first.

The 42-year-old said the decisions not to bring the artistes under his label still haunt him.

“Those are the artistes that I didn’t sign and I regret not signing,” he said.

Don Jazzy, who co-founded the now-defunct Mo’Hits Records and later established Mavin Records in 2012, is known for discovering and grooming talents like Wande Coal, Tiwa Savage, Reekado Banks, Rema, Ayra Starr and Johnny Drille.

Simi, who once auditioned for Don Jazzy, gained prominence with the release of her 2014 single ‘Tiff’ under X3M Music.

Teni rose to fame under Dr Dolor Entertainment, while Falz made his name through his independent label Bahd Guys Records.

Don Jazzy had also previously mentioned that he saw Davido’s potential early but assumed the singer’s wealthy background would be enough to propel his career.

Despite missing out on the four, the music producer continues to play a key role in pushing Afrobeats to the global stage through Mavin Records.
