I once played with Wilson Oruma, AY Makun says after winning man of the match at Troost-Ekong charity game

Comedian Ayo Makun, popularly known as AY, has said he once played football alongside former Super Eagles star Wilson Oruma before venturing into entertainment.

A video shared on Instagram on Tuesday captured the moment the 53-year-old made this reveal.

The comedian made this known after being named Man of the Match at the William Troost-Ekong Foundation Charity Match held on Sunday at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, Lagos.

“I once played with Wilson Oruma, I played club side. I once played with DSA,” AY said, referring to his time at Delta-based Desert Sports Academy.

He explained that although football was his early passion, a change in interests over time led him into the entertainment industry.

When asked how he felt about receiving the Man of the Match award, the filmmaker said: “Well, it’s called magic. When people don’t expect you to do something and they see you doing it, it makes you exceptional, it makes you phenomenal.”

Despite his standout performance, the Arsenal fan said he would have given the award to Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi, whom he praised for his strong contribution to the team during the game.

AY was one of several celebrities who participated in the 2025 edition of the match organised by Super Eagles vice-captain William Troost-Ekong through his foundation.

Other participants included Victor Osimhen, Odion Ighalo, Ahmed Musa, Wilfred Ndidi, Anthony Joshua, Tobi Amusan, Broda Shaggi, Odumodublvck, Bovi, Mayorkun and rapper Vector.

The match formed part of the foundation’s “Play for Purpose” campaign, which aims to raise funds for education, health, and sports development in Nigeria.

The 2025 edition also marked the public release of “FOUNDATIONS,” a documentary on Troost-Ekong’s football journey and his efforts to give back to society.

Troost-Ekong later posted on Instagram, thanking supporters and describing the 2025 match as a success: “Thank you TEF Family & Friends for making 2025 ‘Play For Purpose’ in Lagos a success! Onikan felt special yesterday!”
