President Bola Tinubu says he is eagerly looking forward to receiving the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) trophy from the Super Falcons in Abuja following their dramatic 3-2 victory in the final.
The president made the remark during a video call with team captain Rasheedat Ajibade, other players and officials on Saturday after Nigeria secured its record-extending 10th WAFCON title.
“I look forward to receiving the trophy in Abuja,” Tinubu said.
“I am very, very proud of you. The entire nation is proud of you. You have lifted our spirits. You are a pride to your generation and we are all very happy. You will be celebrated.”
He commended Ajibade, who emerged as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and Woman of the Tournament, as well as Esther Okoronkwo, whose 64th-minute penalty sparked Nigeria’s comeback.
Responding on behalf of the team, Ajibade expressed appreciation for the president’s support, particularly the timely approval of their allowances.
“Thank you, Mr President, for everything you have done for us, especially for approving our payments,” she said.
“We are very grateful, and we look forward to presenting the trophy to you in Abuja.”
The interaction ended with the players singing the national anthem and shouting three loud “Gbosa!” cheers for the president.
