Veteran entertainer Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, says he has no regrets about the choices he has made in life.
The 75-year-old spoke in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja, reflecting on his unconventional journey and the price of standing out.
“I only wanted to break out of my father’s shadow. I have no regret whatsoever, as life’s experiences have built me into a stronger and fulfilled man.”
The entertainer, who is the son of late Supreme Court Justice Chukwudifu Oputa, also spoke on his unconventional lifestyle and bold public persona, which have often drawn criticism and praise alike.
“No regrets, not even one. I’m not wired to have regrets. That’s why I call myself the boy who lived. Not many of my kind live to this ripe age, especially in a country like Nigeria,” he said.
Charly Boy, who has been outspoken on issues from politics to youth empowerment, said he never wanted to follow the crowd.
“I was never interested in following the crowd, I was interested in standing out. I paid the price for all my daring moves but the rewards have been overwhelming. I have the love of my children, the friendship of my wife, the admiration of my followers, and the grace of God,” he added.
He further described his life as a symbol of perseverance and rebellion.
“My life is a testament to the power of authenticity, courage and resilience. I have walked through the fire of criticism, danced in the rain of rebellion, and emerged stronger with every storm. I am not just a survivor; I am a warrior of truth and a rebel with a cause.”
Charly Boy on Thursday also shared a post on social media featuring video messages from friends who celebrated him on his milestone birthday.
He captioned the post:
“Happy birthday to me! Charlyboy! As I commemorate another year of my abracadabra life, I exhort the youth to embody unwavering consistency, unrelenting tenacity, and unbridled audacity in pursuit of their aspirations.
“Charlyboy’s meteoric rise is a testament to the power of diligence and passion.
May my legacy inspire you to stay resolute, push boundaries, and relentlessly pursue excellence. ”
Charly Boy, also known as the Area Fada, remains one of Nigeria’s most iconic entertainers. From his music to television work and social activism, he has consistently challenged norms and encouraged self-expression among Nigerian youths.
