Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has reacted to the death of Nkanu Nnamdi, the son of renowned author Chimamanda Adichie.
In a statement shared on his X handle on Thursday, Mr Obi said he had been aware of the child’s illness before his death.
Obi disclosed that Chimamanda informed him of Nkanu’s health condition on January 2, after which he followed developments and prayed for the child’s recovery.
According to him, the news of Nkanu’s death came as a shock.
“I have been following Nkanu’s illness since Chimamanda informed me on January 2. I shared in their anxiety, prayed, and hoped for his recovery. The news I received yesterday morning was heartbreaking,” he said.
Obi said he was thinking of the pain Chimamanda was experiencing as a mother and also expressed sympathy for her husband, Dr Ivara Esege.
He extended his condolences to the family and prayed for strength, comfort and grace as they mourn.
Obi also prayed for the repose of the child’s soul.
Nkanu, aged one year and nine months, died on January 7 after a brief illness.
The family confirmed the death in a statement and requested privacy and prayers.
Chimamanda and her husband also have a daughter born in 2016 and Nkanu’s surviving twin brother.
