I coined ‘Detty December’ – Mr Eazi

Singer Mr Eazi

Singer and entrepreneur Oluwatosin Ajibade, popularly known as Mr Eazi, has said he coined the popular phrase “Detty December” in 2016.

The musician made the claim while speaking during his Detty Rave concert in Accra, Ghana, where he addressed the origin of the term and how it later became widely adopted.

According to him, the phrase was created while he and his friends were planning a December event. He said it was meant to capture the spirit of returning home, celebrating freely and enjoying the festive season.

“So in 2016, me and my guys invented Detty December. And Detty December is all about going back to your roots, having fun and enjoying life intentionally,” he said.

“Detty December is bigger than Mr Eazi. It’s bigger than anybody. Detty December is for all of us.”

Over the years, “Detty December” has become a widely used expression in Nigeria and parts of West Africa to describe the busy end of year period marked by concerts, parties, weddings, fashion events and other social gatherings. Cities such as Lagos and Accra are known to experience an influx of visitors and increased entertainment activities during the season.

Mr Eazi has consistently associated the term with his Detty Rave concerts, which have been held in different cities and have become part of the season’s entertainment calendar.

The phrase attracted public attention after entrepreneur Deola Art Alade reportedly registered “Detty December” as a trademark, sparking conversations around ownership and usage of the term.
