I can’t speak well, Toyin Lawani joins Chimamanda Adichie in calling out Lagos hospital

Celebrity fashion designer Toyin Lawani has publicly accused a Lagos based hospital of medical negligence following a spine surgery that she says left her with serious health challenges.

In a series of posts on her Instagram page on Sunday, Toyin said she underwent spinal surgery at Euracare Multispecialist Hospital in Victoria Island but suffered complications shortly after the procedure.

She said she paid close to N100 million for the surgery and related care, but her condition deteriorated. According to her, she lost the use of her legs and developed severe lung complications.

“Till today I still can’t speak well or walk well. I had complications and started bleeding in my lungs. Had to be taken back into the theatre the next day to reoperate again, before I know I stopped breathing. They had to puncture my lungs and destroyed my vocal cords,” Toyin wrote.

She added that she was later discharged but had to rely on medical advice from an ear, nose and throat specialist in the United Kingdom. Toyin said she eventually travelled abroad with her family for further treatment, where doctors discovered lung infections that required additional surgery.

Toyin said she intends to pursue legal action against the hospital once she is physically strong enough to do so.

Her allegations come amid growing scrutiny of the same hospital following claims by award winning author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie over the death of her son, Nnamdi.

Adichie had accused the hospital of negligence after her 21 month old son died during medical care in Lagos. She said he had been brought in for an MRI and preparation for medical evacuation abroad when complications occurred.

The Lagos State Government has since ordered a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death, while health authorities have commenced a review of clinical practices at the facility.

Euracare Hospital has expressed sympathy over the incidents and said it is conducting an internal review, maintaining that it operates in line with established medical protocols.
