Singer Sean Tizzle has penned an emotional letter to his late mentor Sound Sultan, reflecting on the impact the artiste had on his life and career.
The heartfelt tribute, titled “A Letter to My Mentor,” was shared on Instagram on Thursday, days after the fourth remembrance of Sound Sultan who died on July 11, 2021, following a battle with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma.
In the letter, Sean Tizzle poured out his long-held emotions, confessing it had taken him years to find the right words to express his loss.
“It’s taken me years to find the right words. Maybe I was scared they wouldn’t be enough. Maybe I was still trying to understand how to say goodbye,” he wrote.
Describing Sound Sultan as more than just a legend, Sean called him a big brother and guide who believed in his talent when others ignored him.
“You were a big brother, a guide, a quiet force who saw something in me before the world ever did. You gave me a chance when others wouldn’t even look my way,” he said.
He further recalled how the ‘Mathematics’ singer inspired him beyond music by teaching him humility, grace and the power of purpose.
“You didn’t just teach me about music. You taught me humility, grace, and the importance of using my voice for more than just melodies.”
The ‘Sho Lee’ crooner also highlighted Sound Sultan’s selflessness and enduring legacy.
“You were selfless. You gave without expecting. You showed up when you didn’t have to… your impact lives on in every song, every stage I step on, every time someone says ‘Sho Lee still hits different.’”
In closing, Sean Tizzle wrote: “I wish I said this earlier, to your face. I wish I hugged you tighter. But now, I say it to the world: Thank you, Sound Sultan. I am because you were. I carry your spirit with me always.”
Sound Sultan, born Olanrewaju Fasasi, was a celebrated musician, known for using his music to address societal issues. He died in the United States at age 44. The singer was survived by his wife Farida Fasasi and their three children.
