I almost gave up on music after Mo’Hits collapse – Don Jazzy

Don Jazzy

Music executive Don Jazzy has revealed that he almost gave up on music after the breakup of Mo’Hits Records, the label he co-founded with singer D’banj.

In an interview with Rolling Stone Africa, the Mavin Records boss said the split left him devastated and uncertain about his future in the industry.

“When Mo’Hits ended, I thought that was it. I almost packed up to move abroad. But friends encouraged me to stay and start again, and Mavin Records was born. Since then, I’ve learned not to let anything break me,” he said.

Mo’Hits Records, which dominated the Nigerian music scene in the late 2000s, was home to stars like Wande Coal, Dr SID and D’Prince. The label eventually collapsed in 2012 following internal disagreements between Don Jazzy and D’banj.

After the fallout, Don Jazzy established Mavin Records, which went on to become one of Africa’s most successful record labels, launching the careers of Tiwa Savage, Reekado Banks, Korede Bello, Rema, Ayra Starr and others.

In April 2024, Universal Music Group acquired a majority stake in Mavin Global, marking another milestone in Don Jazzy’s journey from heartbreak to global success.

Reflecting on his growth, the 42-year-old producer said the end of Mo’Hits taught him resilience and the importance of starting over.

“I’ve learned not to let anything break me,” he reiterated.

Mo’Hits Records was founded in 2006 by Don Jazzy and D’banj. Their partnership produced several hit songs including ‘Tongolo,’ ‘Oliver Twist’ and ‘Why Me’ before their highly publicised split.
