Filmmaker Toyin Abraham has said her public support for President Bola Tinubu during the last election had a negative impact on her career.
Toyin spoke while advising actor Timini Egbuson on how to improve his movie Love and New Notes’ box office performance.
She said, “The first advice I will give you in my entire life is, don’t put your mouth in politics. Don’t tell them you’re supporting anybody. Don’t support anybody, just be on your own. Be neutral.”
When Timini reminded her of her past endorsement of Tinubu, the actress replied, “That was then.” She then admitted the decision affected her professionally, exclaiming, “Haaaaaaa, it affected me oooo.”
Toyin’s comments come after she faced criticism online for openly supporting Tinubu, who contested the 2023 presidential election under the All Progressives Congress.
Following the election, some social media users vowed to boycott her films. Her 2023 movie Malaika was also widely circulated on WhatsApp, which she said affected its performance in cinemas.
Reacting to the backlash at the time, the actress questioned why her choice of candidate attracted criticism.
The actress later said the experience taught her a lesson about publicly declaring political preferences, noting that she is not a politician and prefers to focus on her work in the film industry.
