How my late sister inspired my interest in politics – Saidi Balogun

Actor Saidi Balogun

Actor Saidi Balogun has explained why he associates with politicians, saying his involvement stems from his late sister’s influence and a desire to understand governance and promote civic awareness among Nigerians.

The 58-year-old spoke on TVC’s Saturday Breakfast, noting that he was one of the first entertainers to openly support politicians during the 2023 elections.

“In 2023, I’m one of the first actors that mingles with the politicians because my late sister, Suleymane Adediji, and Laiba Lugmu, they’re into politics,” he said.

“But when I did for Asiwaju Bola Tinubu in 2023, I did it for, well, all these people are seen. Who do you know? Who do you trust? I said, let’s go. Thank God he won.”

Saidi said his decision was not merely political but aimed at encouraging Nigerians to be more informed about the workings of their government.

He also cited the ongoing conversation about fuel subsidy removal as an example of how citizens often lack proper understanding of national issues.

“I saw a graduate, and I was discussing subsidy. He doesn’t even know what subsidy is all about. Once they remove subsidy, the money made, how it’s going to be spent, he doesn’t know. All he knows is, ‘I am hungry. Rice last year was N50,000; this year is N80,000.’ We need to know about our country and what is going on,” he said.

When asked if he planned to venture into politics, the Eti Keta star replied, “If it is my calling, I will.”

Saidi, who has spent over three decades in Nollywood, is known for his roles in Yoruba and English films.

He was previously married to actress Fathia Williams and both remain respected figures in the film industry.
