Music executive Dayo Adeneye has spoken about the role late media mogul Raymond Dokpesi played in shaping Afrobeats and Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
Dokpesi was the founder of DAAR Communications, the parent company of Africa Independent Television and Raypower FM.
Adeneye worked with DAAR Communications across several roles for multiple years while also establishing Kennis Music.
In an interview on With Chude, Adeneye credited Dokpesi for driving the growth of Afrobeats and Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
He added that Dokpesi created opportunities through his media platforms, which helped discover and promote emerging talents like Daddy Showkey.
“Raymond Dokpesi played a significant role in what we enjoy today as Afrobeats and the entertainment industry,” he said.
“To his credit, he provided a platform through radio and TV and encouraged us to discover young Nigerians; Daddy Showkey is a testament to that.”
Dokpesi, a media entrepreneur, launched Raypower FM in 1994 as Nigeria’s first private FM radio station. Two years later, he established Africa Independent Television.
He died in May 2023 following a fall on a treadmill.
Adeneye co-founded Kennis Music with Kenny Ogungbe in the late 1990s. The record label was home to artistes such as 2Baba, Jaywon, Eedris Abdulkareem, Sir Shina Peters and Tony Tetuila.
The duo have received several recognitions, including induction into the Hip Hop World Hall of Fame at the Headies in 2006.
