Actress Eucharia Anunobi has spoken about the backlash she faced after playing a controversial role in the film Glamour Girls 2.
Speaking in an interview, the 60-year-old said the role led to people stereotyping her as a seductress and “husband snatcher”, with some women even warning their partners to stay away from her.
Eucharia played Anita, a wild and promiscuous escort, in the movie released in the 1990s. She said many viewers struggled to separate her real personality from the character she portrayed.
“I faced a lot of backlash for my role in Glamour Girls 2. You know, at that time the Nigerian populace pretended that they don’t watch such movies. So, a lot of people were labelling me. They called me Sharon Stone, Mammy Water, Husband Snatcher.
“The character I played was a student who snatched a wealthy man from his wife. So, a lot of people were seeing me as a seductress. Well, I am very alluring.
“I can’t deny that because if I deny myself that means I am denying God. A lot of people were like that leave your man with Eucharia, she’s going to take him away. It was crazy to the point that if women see me when they are with their men, they hold them tightly,” she said.
Eucharia stressed that she was only acting a script and did not expect the strong reaction from the public.
The actress rose to prominence in the 1990s through several Nollywood productions and has featured in dozens of films over the years.
Beyond acting, the actress is also known as an evangelist and motivational speaker. She was ordained as a minister in 2012 and has often spoken publicly on faith and social issues.
Her personal life has also drawn public attention. She married Charles Ekwu in 2000 and the union produced a son, Raymond, before the couple divorced after six years. Raymond died in 2017 due to complications from sickle cell disease.
