Actress Iyabo Ojo has revealed that she was invited by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following the lavish celebration of her daughter Priscilla Ojo’s wedding.
Priscilla had a traditional white wedding in Lagos in April, which attracted numerous celebrities from both Nigeria and Tanzania.
Videos from the event went viral online, showcasing guests celebrating by spraying bundles of naira and foreign currencies.
Iyabo, in a statement shared on Instagram on Tuesday, said she was invited by the EFCC while she was abroad and honoured the invitation upon returning to Nigeria.
“Following the recent media publication on social media and numerous calls and text messages from different quarters seeking to hear from me on the EFCC invitation and to ascertain my welfare, I find it expedient to release this briefing,” she wrote.
According to the actress, she visited the EFCC on Monday.
“I was asked several questions relating to my personal bio data, career, work experience, and companies, amongst others,” she said.
Iyabo added that EFCC officials showed her video clips from the wedding where guests were seen spraying naira and foreign currencies.
“I was asked if I knew this was illegal, and I explained that I thought only abuse or mutilation of the naira was an offense. The EFCC officials clarified that spraying money, including on people’s bodies, is prohibited. I was surprised to learn that spraying any currency, including dollars, is also not allowed,” she explained.
She noted that she was released the same day after questioning, but her lawyer, O.I. Salami, was asked to stand in for her in case of a future summons.
“Given this experience, I strongly advise against spraying any currency in Nigeria to avoid issues with the EFCC. Perhaps it’s time to reconsider this long-standing tradition,” she said.
Iyabo now joins a growing list of celebrities who have been invited by the EFCC over similar incidents. Others include E-Money, Cubana Chief Priest, Obi Cubana and Bobrisky.
