Kano State Hisbah Board has cancelled the planned wedding between two TikTok content creators, Ashiru Idris, popularly known as Mai Wushirya and Basira ‘Yar Guda.

Deputy commander of Hisbah, Mujahedeen Aminuddeen, said the board found that the supposed relationship between the pair was not genuine but a plan to avoid legal punishment for previous actions.

“We discovered that the proposed marriage was not genuine but meant to escape legal issues. So, we cancelled it to prevent future problems,” Mr Aminuddeen said.

He added that although both TikTokers had taken blood tests to check medical compatibility, the process was stopped.

According to him, the matter will return to court if it is not resolved.

Earlier, Magistrate Halima Wali of a Kano court had postponed judgement on a case of immoral conduct filed against the duo by the Kano State Censorship Board.

The charges followed a video that appeared on Wushirya’s social media page.

The court referred the pair to the Hisbah Board to arrange a proper Islamic wedding after they both claimed in court that they were in love and planning to marry.

The court gave the board 60 days to organise the wedding and report back if it did not happen.

The decision drew public criticism, as many viewed it as a forced marriage.

Responding to the controversy, Baba Jibo, spokesperson for the Kano State Judiciary, said the public misunderstood the court’s ruling.

“The court never ordered a forced marriage,” he said.

“It only allowed them time to marry since they both claimed they loved each other.”

He added that Basira told the court she would only marry Idris if he provided his own house rather than a rented one, leading the court to pause its ruling to allow them to proceed with marriage under Islamic law.

The development follows earlier criticism by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), which condemned the court directive as unconstitutional and a violation of fundamental rights.

The NBA said marriage cannot be imposed as punishment or moral correction and called for judicial restraint in handling similar cases in the future.
