The National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) has expressed grief over the death of Phyna’s sister Ruth Otabor, a student of Auchi Polytechnic, who died following a road crash involving Dangote’s truck.
The mother of two died at Lagoon Hospital, Lagos, after sustaining injuries in the August 13 accident.
In a statement on Monday, NAPS President Eshiofune Oghayan, said Otabor’s death was another reminder of the dangers faced by students on Nigerian roads.
“Though Ruth was swiftly evacuated to one of Nigeria’s foremost hospitals, she could not survive the severe injuries. Her death is another sad testament to the dangers our students face daily,” the statement read.
Oghayan said the association was making arrangements to support the family and announced that Otabor’s two children would be placed on scholarships from primary to tertiary level.
He added that steps were being taken to immortalise her name at Auchi Polytechnic.
“We condole with her family and children, and we assure the student community that Ruth’s death will not be in vain. Her memory strengthens our demand for justice, accountability, and safer roads for all,” he said.
Otabor’s sister, Big Brother Naija winner Josephina Otabor, popularly known as Phyna, confirmed the death in a letter issued by Eko Solicitors & Advocates on Sunday.
“With a heavy heart the family regrets to announce the passing on to glory of their daughter, sister, mother on this 31st Day of August, 2025 at about 06:30hrs. The family is presently grieving and will appreciate to be given a private moment to mourn the departed,” the letter signed by Justice Segun Ojienoh read.
The family said funeral arrangements would be made public later.
