Gbenga Adeyinka, Michael Effiong mourn live band icon Akiin Shuga

Comedian Gbenga Adeyinka and Ovation International Magazine editor Michael Effiong have joined others in mourning live band singer Akinloye Tofowomo, popularly known as Akiin Shuga, who died at 50.

QEDng earlier reported that his family confirmed his death in a statement posted on Instagram on Monday.

The statement described him as a “revered music icon, Grandmaster, and custodian of rhythm, culture, and the spirit of performance.”

“It is with profound solemnity and total submission to the will of God that the family of Akinloye Tofowomo (Akiin Shuga) — revered music icon, Grandmaster, and managing director of Shuga Limb Foundation and Shuga Entertainment, Nigeria’s most prestigious live band — announces his passing in New Brunswick, Canada,” the statement read.

The family, represented by Femi Dare, said he is survived by his wife, children, siblings and mother. Sources told QEDng that Akiin Shuga’s death was cancer-related.

Gbenga Adeyinka shared a photo of the deceased with the caption, “@akinshuga I love you so much… why? 😭😭😭😭”

Michael Effiong also wrote, “OUR END POLIO AMBASSADOR IS GONE….” He added, “Just a few days ago, AKIIN, a passionate #EndPolioNow Ambassador, recorded this promo for us to commemorate the #Worldpolioday2025. He gave his all to humanity. May God bless his soul and strengthen his family.”

Public relations expert Samuel Olatunji said, “For Akiin Shuga, it is goodnight. What a sad news! This is the saddest news I have read this year. Akiin Shuga dead? He was part of those clients that stabilized my PR firm. I will never forget!”

Born on January 6, 1975, in Ondo State, Akiin Shuga was a polio survivor, founder of Shuga Band and Shuga Limb Foundation and president of the Association of Music Band Owners of Nigeria (AMBON).
