Governor Abba Yusuf has said former Kano State governor and former APC national chairman Abdullahi Ganduje cannot give him instructions because he is the leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State.
Governor Yusuf spoke on Friday during a meeting with political supporters while responding to criticism over his defection from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the APC.
He said his decision to leave the NNPP was based on internal disputes within the party.
The governor said he and his supporters had raised concerns about developments in the NNPP but were ignored.
He said the move was taken to prevent wider political problems in Kano State.
“We acted early. If we had not taken that step, millions of people in Kano would have been affected. Today, there is calm,” he said.
Yusuf rejected claims that he betrayed the Kwankwasiyya Movement, saying some members also left the NNPP without consultation.
He questioned the criticism directed at his defection, noting that others had also changed parties.
“They say Abba has followed Ganduje to hand over what was entrusted to him. The question is: who is the leader of APC in Kano today?” he asked, with supporters responding that he was the leader.
The governor said he has respect for Ganduje but would not accept instructions from him.
“What exists between Ganduje and me is mutual respect. But he cannot give me instructions because I am the leader,” Abba Yusuf said.
