The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has urged all road users to drive safely during the Sallah festive season.
FRSC Sector Commander, Taofeeq Sokunbi, in a statement on Thursday in Osogbo, warned drivers against speeding and reckless driving.
Sokunbi stated that speeding and route violations cause most crashes in Osun.
He also cautioned commercial drivers against using hard drugs or consuming alcohol while driving.
The sector commander emphasised that installing speed-limiting devices in commercial vehicles would help reduce road accidents.
“Our operatives and Special Marshals will be highly visible and professional during the festive period to ensure Osun State roads remain safe for all,” he said.
Sokunbi confirmed that 565 regular and 422 special marshals would be deployed for special operations. Additionally, 39 patrol cars, four motorbikes, two tow trucks and five ambulances would be used.
He explained that the aim was to improve the corps’ presence on the roads through early deployment of personnel and resources.
Sokunbi noted that this would help reduce Road Traffic Crashes (RTCs), Road Traffic Fatalities (RTFs) and Road Traffic Injuries (RTIs).
He added that the operation would ensure strict enforcement of road traffic laws, prompt rescue responses and swift removal of obstructions.
According to him, it will also enhance public education, enlightenment and enforcement of key road safety regulations.
The corps’ strategies include personnel and logistics deployment to improve visibility, traffic calming measures and ensuring lane discipline.
“Other measures include 24-hour rescue and recovery services, continuous public awareness campaigns, collaboration with security agencies, and round-the-clock surveillance and intelligence gathering.
“Critical Enforcement Targets include speeding, reckless overtaking, lane indiscipline, road obstructions, phone use while driving, overloading, and seat belt violations,” Sokunbi said.
According to him, additional enforcement will target passenger manifest violations, unsafe vehicles, improper latching of goods and illegal number plate usage.
He urged motorists to be disciplined, as responsible driving helps reduce road accidents.
