The Federal Road Safety Corps has blamed excessive speed and wrongful overtaking for the road accident involving boxer Anthony Joshua on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
In a statement on Monday, the corps confirmed that the crash occurred on Monday, 29 December, around the Sinoma area near Sagamu in Ogun State.
The accident involved a Lexus Jeep conveying Joshua and a stationary truck.
According to the Ogun Sector Command, the crash happened at about 12 noon and was reported immediately.
FRSC operatives arrived at the scene within minutes and carried out rescue operations, traffic control and evacuation of victims.
The statement said the crash involved a black Lexus Jeep with registration number KRD 850 HN and a stationary red commercial Sinotruck with no visible registration number.
Five adult males were involved.
Two people died, one person sustained injuries, while two others were unhurt.
Anthony Joshua was rescued alive and sustained minor injuries.
The injured person was taken to the hospital for medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to Livewell Morgue in Ajaka, Sagamu.
The Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division was notified for further investigation.
Preliminary findings by the corps showed that the Lexus Jeep was suspected to be travelling above the speed limit and lost control while overtaking before crashing into the stationary truck parked by the roadside.
The FRSC said excessive speed and wrongful overtaking were the primary causes of the crash.
The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, on behalf of the management and staff of the FRSC, extended condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured, including Anthony Joshua, a speedy recovery.
The corps also warned motorists against dangerous overtaking, speeding and disregard for traffic rules, especially on major highways such as the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and urged road users to prioritise safety, particularly during the festive period.
