A friend of Kehinde Adeoye, one of the six staff of United Capital who died in the Afriland Tower fire in Lagos last Tuesday, has shared details of her final moments.
In a post on X on Monday, Boluwatife said Kehinde, who had just returned from maternity leave, left behind a three-month-old baby and a six-year-old child.
Boluwatife wrote that shortly before her death, Kehinde called her husband and urged him to take care of their children.
She added that Kehinde died from smoke inhalation and did not sustain burns during the incident.
“In her final hours, she was trapped, she reached out for help! She was conscious till she felt life draining out of her. Smoke inhalation! Smoke! Not a scar. ‘Ba mi to ju awon omo yen’ — some of her last words to her husband. Nigeria failed her! Didn’t have to die,” Boluwatife wrote.
United Capital had on Monday confirmed the death of six of its employees in the September 16 fire, naming them as Jesutoni Shodipo, Kehinde Adeoye, Ndidi Osaemedike-Okeke, Olumide Oyefodunrin, Opeyemi Oloyede and Rebecca Adenuga.
The Afriland Tower fire claimed 10 lives in total, including four personnel of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).
The building also houses offices of the United Bank for Africa, FIRS and United Capital Plc.
