The much-anticipated E1 Lagos Grand Prix kicks off today, Friday, October 3, in Lagos, marking Africa’s first-ever all-electric powerboat championship.

The opening day features practice runs on the Lagos Lagoon, media engagements and fan activities ahead of qualifying races on Saturday and the main showdown on Sunday.

In a statement on his social media handle on Monday, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu described the event as a historic moment for Lagos and the continent, noting that it reflects the city’s drive for innovation, sustainability, and global recognition.

“The E1 Lagos Grand Prix is a demonstration of innovation and progress, showing how sport can inspire sustainable solutions for the future.

“It is also a celebration of the creativity and resilience that define our people,” he said.

The all-electric RaceBird boats, capable of gliding above the water on hydrofoils, will be piloted by mixed-gender teams – a requirement organisers say demonstrates their commitment to inclusivity in motorsport.

To ease movement, the Lagos government has announced traffic diversions around Victoria Island and Lekki, with LASTMA officials on duty and parking spaces provided at locations including the Nigerian Law School and Fidelity Bank. The Navy and marine police are also on standby to secure the waterways.

Sponsors of the championship include Guinness, Singleton, and FirstBank. In a statement, FirstBank said:

“As proud sponsors of the E1 Lagos GP, we’re not just backing a race; we’re championing a movement. One that celebrates innovation, pushes the boundaries of sustainability, and unleashes the unstoppable Vybes of Lagos onto the global stage.

“Picture this – the electric RaceBirds soaring across our waters, powered by clean energy, driven by pure adrenaline, and cheered on by the energy of our people. This is more than competition, it’s a showcase that we are committed to the future.

“Ride the Wave. Feel the Vybes. Be Part of the E1 Lagos GP.”

Organisers expect up to 15,000 visitors during the three-day event, with an estimated $100 million in economic impact. Hotels in Victoria Island, Ikoyi and Lekki have already recorded full bookings.

The promoters of the initiative stated that the E1 Grand Prix, the world’s first electric powerboat championship, will bring the planet’s fastest electric boats to Lagos waters. The event places the city alongside international host destinations such as Monaco, Venice and Jeddah, while also giving Lagos the chance to carve its own identity as Africa’s aquatic capital.

The championship arrives in Lagos with the title battle finely poised – Team Brady leads the standings by just one point over Team Rafa, while Team Aoki and Team Blue Rising are also in close contention. With Lagos hosting the penultimate race before the Miami finale, the stakes are high.

Beyond the competition, the weekend also features fashion and cultural showcases as part of a campaign organisers say highlights Lagos’ creativity and humanitourism potential. International guests including Didier Drogba, co-owner of Team Drogba Global Africa, are expected.
