Filmmaker Juliet Asante shares impact of Anikulapo: The Ghoul Awakens on Ghana’s film scene

Ghanaian actress and producer Juliet Asante has spoken about the advantages of shooting filmmaker Kunle Afolayan’s Anikulapo: The Ghoul Awakens in Ghana.

In a post on Instagram on Tuesday featuring pictures taken on set, Asante shared her thoughts on the impact of international productions being shot in her country.

“This is a photo dump.

“When Shoot in Ghana happens:

• it creates employment for local communities and creative professionals
• it enables real-time transfer of critical skills
• production spending flows into the local economy
• Ghana is positioned on the global stage, strengthening branding and soft power
• our locations come alive, supporting film tourism

“When you watch #Anikulapo on January 30, you will not only see Ghana on screen — you will see what collaboration and shared vision can achieve.

“This project is a reminder that we are stronger when we work together.

“What unites us is far greater than what divides us.

“Our histories are intertwined, and our futures are connected — Ghana, Nigeria, and across West Africa.

“I am grateful to have played a role in a moment that reflects this truth.

“Thank you Kunle Afolayan @kunleafo for the trust and collaboration.”

The comments come as Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan released the official trailer for the second season of Anikulapo, titled Anikulapo: The Ghoul Awakens. The new season is set to premiere on Netflix on January 30.

Production for the series took place in both Nigeria and Ghana, including the Kunle Afolayan Productions (KAP) Film Village and Resort in Oyo State, Nigeria, and in Cape Coast, Ghana. The project was part of Ghana’s Shoot in Ghana initiative, which aims to attract international film productions and support local creative industries.

The expanded cast includes returning actors and new faces as the story explores themes of power, loyalty, and survival across different lands and cultures.
