Filmmaker Editi Effiong confirms The Black Book sequel With Hollywood producer

Filmmaker Editi Effiong has confirmed that a sequel to his 2023 Netflix film The Black Book is in the works.

The new project, titled The Black Book: Old Scores, will see Effiong partner with Nicky Weinstock, known for producing the Apple TV+ series Severance.

In a post on X on Sunday, Effiong wrote, “It’s been a while. I thought to peek out a little to confirm the absolute worst-kept secret – yes, The Black Book: Old Scores, is happening, with Severance producer, Nicky Weinstock, joining the team as producer.”

He said he spent the past two years developing the script with co-writer Bunmi Ajakaiye and working with Weinstock, Mimi and Ashley to secure funding from Adino Capital, Mango Tree and Blooming Caravan for what he described as “this historic production”.

Effiong added, “The Black Book became the most successful Nigerian film globally and it was important that the sequel meets the high standards set in our 2023 film. I’m excited to say that you are going to absolutely love Old Scores.”

Richard Mofe-Damijo will reprise his role as Paul Edima, the grieving father who takes on a corrupt police unit after the death of his son. Effiong said the sequel will introduce new characters from Nigeria, the United Kingdom, the United States and Japan. He also described the production as the biggest Nigerian production to date, with a 300 member crew.

Released in September 2023, The Black Book was made on a reported one million dollar budget. The film ranked in Netflix’s global top ten in more than 60 countries and peaked at number three worldwide, drawing over 20 million views in its first weeks on the platform.

Weinstock’s credits include film and television projects across the United States, and his involvement signals a broader international push for the sequel.

A release date for The Black Book: Old Scores has not been announced.
