Federal Government on Tuesday arraigned human rights activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters Omoyele Sowore at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Mr Sowore was arraigned on a five-count charge bordering on alleged cyber bullying, cyber stalking and making false claims against President Bola Tinubu.

The charges also listed Meta Platforms Inc. and X Corp. as co-defendants.

According to court documents, Sowore was accused of using his verified X handle on August 25, to post, “This criminal @officialABAT actually went to Brazil to state that there is no more corruption under his regime in Nigeria. What audacity to lie shamelessly!”

The post was said to contravene Section 24(2)(b) of the Cybercrimes Prohibition and Prevention Act, 2024.

Prosecutors argued that the publication was intended to cause public disorder and discredit the presidency.

Federal Government further alleged that Meta and X failed to moderate or remove the content from their platforms.

Sowore, who was present in court, is facing trial alongside the two tech companies.

The matter has been adjourned to September 27.
