Residents of Magodo GRA Phase 2 in Lagos have petitioned Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu over what they describe as a potentially hazardous construction project in a landlocked area of their estate.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Magodo Residents Association (MRA) expressed concern about an ongoing development in a location previously designated as a gorge in the estate’s original masterplan.
The residents allege that the project, which they say is being supported by unnamed officials in the Lagos State ministry of physical planning, threatens lives, properties and the environment.
The residents noted that the site acts as a natural flood control zone for surrounding areas including Ikeja, Alausa and Ogba and that the development could lead to serious environmental and infrastructural consequences.
According to the statement, the land is not only inaccessible but also structurally unsuitable for development due to its role in stormwater drainage and erosion control.
The residents claimed a similar attempt to build on the land about a decade ago failed due to the terrain.
The association further alleged that the developer recently invited government agencies and armed personnel to demolish an uncompleted structure at the site, an action they say was carried out without consideration for the surrounding environment or resident concerns.
“The process of demolition has constituted a serious health hazard to the community and has resulted in intermittent disturbances and damages to the surrounding properties,” the statement said.
They added that the vegetation and road infrastructure in the area were community-funded and are now at risk due to excavation activities in the gorge.
The residents outlined five key demands: a stop order on the construction activities, a return to the original masterplan, restoration of the natural landscape, provision of adequate drainage and access infrastructure if development is approved and indemnity for existing property owners against future damage.
They commended Lagos commissioner for the environment, Tokunbo Wahab, for his recent visit to the estate and Governor Sanwo-Olu for his past support during prior crises, while urging swift intervention.
The petition was signed by Niyi Odusi, chairman of the MRA, on behalf of the board and residents.
