Chiwetalu has previously spoken about his health struggles, including a spiritual attack that led to a severe illness.
In August 2023, he revealed that he had been poisoned during a Nollywood event in Abuja, which required hospitalisation and medical treatment. He shared that items were removed from his body during treatment, highlighting the severity of the attack.
Chiwetalu’s situation is part of a wider concern affecting veteran Nollywood actors.
In March 2024, actor Amaechi Muonagor passed away after battling stroke and kidney-related diseases. He had been undergoing weekly dialysis and physiotherapy to manage the effects of the stroke. Similarly, Olumide Bakare died in April 2017 after a prolonged battle with heart and lung disease. He had suffered a cardiac arrest earlier that year and was hospitalized at the University College Hospital in Ibadan.
In November 2023, Agu himself called on the government to assist ailing actors, emphasising the importance of healthcare and financial support for those who have contributed significantly to the nation’s entertainment sector.
