Fani-Kayode criticises Dele Momodu over Tinubu–Abacha comparison

Femi Fani-Kayode

Former Minister of Aviation Femi Fani-Kayode has criticised media personality and politician Dele Momodu for comparing President Bola Tinubu to former military ruler Sani Abacha.

Mr Momodu made the comparison during an interview on Politics Today hosted by Seun Okinbaloye on Channels Television on Sunday.

In the interview, Momodu criticised the administration and described Tinubu’s leadership style as dictatorial.

Reacting in a post on X on Monday, Mr Fani-Kayode said the comparison was unfair to the president and other officials in government.

“For my brother Bobby Dee to compare President Tinubu to General Sani Abacha and claim that he is a dictator suggests that he is suffering from a level of cognitive dissonance,” he wrote.

Fani-Kayode said he respects Momodu but disagreed with his comments during the interview.

“I love Dele and God knows I have respect for him but he sounded drained, tired and broken and spoke little sense yesterday in his interview,” he said.

He also advised Momodu to step back from political commentary.

“May I humbly suggest to him to try and take a break from politics and political commentary for a while, get his breath back and attempt to overhaul his intellectual engine?” he added.

Fani-Kayode said Momodu’s remarks were disrespectful to the president, the vice president and other officials.

“Not only was he uncharitable and disrespectful to the President, the Vice President, the ministers, the senators and the newly-appointed ambassadors, many of whom have far more experience than him in governance and government, but he also insulted the collective intelligence of the Nigerian people,” he said.

He also criticised members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and advised them to focus on building their party ahead of the 2027 election.

“He and his associates in the ADC should focus more on trying to build up their ranks and form a strong opposition that we can engage in the 2027 election rather than continuously talk about what our President and our party are doing,” he wrote.

Fani-Kayode added that the party should work on strengthening its structure before presenting itself as an opposition.

He also expressed confidence in Tinubu’s leadership.

“To be sure Tinubu started well, he is doing well and he will, by the grace of God, end well with no regrets in 2031,” he said.
