Family clash erupts at singer Omije Ojumi’s burial

The burial of gospel singer Bunmi Akinnaanu, known as Omije Ojumi, was marked by a public disagreement between her family and relatives of her estranged husband.

Videos from the funeral have circulated widely online.

The clash began when the singer’s estranged husband tried to speak to their children by video call at the cemetery. The call was reportedly cut short after tension grew among those present.

In the footage, a relative of the husband told the deceased singer’s son that his father loved him and that they were his family. The boy reacted angrily, kicking and shouting that he was already loved at home. Family members guided him and his elder sister away from the scene.

Online reactions criticised both sides. One user said, “Shebi won ti fe idi Ara won sita, the thing Dem they help them keep, is the audacity for me. May the soul of the dead rest in peace.”

Another wrote, “It’s always the husbands family.” A third added, “Even the pallbearers are confused.” Another comment read, “They shouldn’t have displayed this stupidity at the burial, they can have another time peacefully for that.” Others expressed concern for the children amid the dispute.

Omije Ojumi died on January 12, at a Lagos hospital after a period of illness.

Earlier, her family rejected claims they were seeking funds for the burial. Her brother-in-law, Femi Eretan, said, “I am from Ondo State and I understand the rudiments of the law. Anyone who claims the family begged for burial funds must provide proof.” He added that the family remained “united and calm” despite the rumours.
