FAAN, MTN launch free wi-fi at Lagos, Abuja airports

MTN Nigeria CEO Karl Toriola

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), in partnership with MTN Nigeria, has launched free Wi-Fi services at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Terminal 2 in Lagos and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

The service was unveiled on Thursday at the Lagos terminal by FAAN’s Managing Director Olubunmi Kuku who was represented by the Director of Airport Operations Abdullahi Mahmood.

Mrs. Kuku said the partnership is part of efforts to improve passenger experience and expand digital infrastructure at Nigerian airports.

She stated that the service would be extended to the MMIA temporary terminal within weeks and rolled out to Enugu, Port Harcourt and Kano international airports over the next three months.

“In 21st century Nigeria, no Nigerian airport should be an offline island. This collaboration with MTN Nigeria demonstrates how effective Public-Private Partnership alignment can modernise infrastructure and strengthen the country’s digital economy,” she said.

She added that the initiative aligns with the digital economy agenda of President Bola Tinubu and the reform plans of the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo.

MTN Nigeria’s Chief Executive Officer Karl Toriola represented by Chief Enterprise Business Officer Lynda Saint-Nwafor, said the company would ensure the service remains reliable and secure.

“We are proud to announce the launch of free WiFi service across major airports in Nigeria in partnership with FAAN. This initiative reflects a shared commitment to improving passenger experience and enhancing digital accessibility,” she said.

According to FAAN, the service will allow passengers to access flight updates, communicate online and use digital services without relying on personal mobile data.

It will also support airport operations such as passenger flow monitoring and information services.

Details of the funding model, user limits and maintenance structure were not disclosed.

In August 2025, the federal government attributed the delay in providing airport Wi-Fi to disagreements between FAAN and the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) over responsibility for the service.

The new partnership between FAAN and MTN Nigeria follows that development.
