Ex-Super Eagles midfielder Henry Nwosu dies days after ex-coach Adegboye Onigbinde

Former national football team midfielder Henry Nwosu has died at the age of 62, days after former national team coach Adegboye Onigbinde died at 88.

Mr Nwosu died in the early hours of Saturday at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) after spending several days in intensive care.

Former teammate Segun Odegbami confirmed the news in a message on Facebook, saying the former midfielder died around 4:00 a.m. after five days in hospital.

“It is with deep pain in my heart that I have to be the conveyor of the news of the death of Henry Nwosu MON,” Mr Odegbami wrote.

Nwosu was part of the Nigeria squad that won the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations, the country’s first title in the competition.

Born on June 14, 1963, in Imo State, he played for Nigeria between 1980 and 1991. He made about 60 appearances and scored eight goals.

He featured in the Africa Cup of Nations tournaments in 1980, 1982, 1984 and 1988.

Nigeria finished second in the 1984 and 1988 editions.

Henry Nwosu also represented Nigeria at the 1980 Summer Olympics and scored the country’s only goal in the tournament.

At club level, he played for New Nigeria Bank FC and ACB Lagos. He also played for ASEC Mimosas in Côte d’Ivoire and Racing FC Bafoussam in Cameroon.

After retiring from football in the early 1990s, Nwosu worked as a coach.

He served as an assistant coach with Nigeria’s national teams, including the side that won a silver medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

He also worked with Union Bank FC and Gateway United FC.
