El-Rufai loses mother days after sister-in-law’s death

Nasir El-Rufai

Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai has lost his mother Hajiya Umma days after the death of his sister-in-law Safiya Rufai.

She died on Friday, March 27.

Her grandson Bello El-Rufai confirmed her death in a Facebook post and asked for prayers for the family.

“Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un. I would like to inform the public of the demise of my grandmother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai who passed away a few hours ago,” he wrote.

He said the family was grateful for her life and prayed for her.

“We are grateful for the life she lived and may Allah SWT bless her gentle soul. May He bless the soul of the parents we have lost. On behalf of our family, we seek your prayers. Thank you,” he added.

The development comes days after the family lost Safiya Rufai, the sister-in-law of El-Rufai.

Bello had earlier said she died after an illness and asked the public to pray for her.

Meanwhile, proceedings continued at the Federal High Court in Abuja over a suit filed by El-Rufai against the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and others.

The suit seeks enforcement of his rights and includes four respondents.

At the hearing on Wednesday, the judge Joyce Abdulmalik said the second respondent had not been served.

El-Rufai’s lawyer Ugochukwu Nnakwu told the court that service had not been completed. Other parties were present in court.

Counsel to the ICPC Isaac Akwo asked that the matter be stood down to allow Abdu Mohammed to appear, but the request was declined.

The judge asked that the magistrate listed in the suit be identified. Nnakwu then applied for an adjournment to regularise the process. The request was not opposed by other lawyers, including those representing the Inspector-General of Police and the Attorney-General of the Federation.

El-Rufai is involved in legal proceedings with the ICPC.
