Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai has alleged that security operatives planned to arrest his elder brother Bashir, if he returned to Nigeria for their mother’s burial.
Mr El-Rufai made the claim in a viral video, saying his brother stayed away to avoid arrest.
“My elder brother Bashir could not come because we learned there was a plan to arrest him. They believe if they get him, I will negotiate,” he said.
He said the decision was taken to prevent the arrest.
El-Rufai’s mother Umma El-Rufai died in Cairo, Egypt, on Friday.
She was brought to Abuja and buried on Sunday.
The development came while El-Rufai was in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) over allegations of corruption and money laundering.
He was arraigned before a Federal High Court in Kaduna on March 24 on a 10-count charge.
The case was adjourned to March 31, for hearing of applications, including his bail request.
He was later granted release to attend his mother’s burial.
El-Rufai also said his brother remained in Cairo during the burial.
