E1 Lagos GP: Sanwo-Olu presents trophy as Team Brazil emerges winner after storm delay

Babaji Sanwo-olu presents award to Team Brazil

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Sunday presented the winners’ trophy to Team Brazil after their historic victory at the storm-delayed E1 Lagos Grand Prix, marking Africa’s first-ever hosting of the all-electric powerboat championship.

The grand finale, held near the Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, began hours behind schedule following a storm that swept across Lagos. Despite the delay, spectators returned in high spirits to watch a thrilling showdown on the water.

Powered by their strong pole position from Saturday’s qualifying, Team Brazil, led by pilot Timmy Hansen, dominated every stage to secure their maiden E1 World Championship win.

They finished ahead of Team Blue Rising and Team Drogba, who placed second and third respectively. Consistent front-runners Team Rafa and Team Brady missed out on podium finishes.

For their Lagos victory, Team Brazil earned 38 points, bringing their total to 89 overall. Despite the impressive haul, the team remains outside title contention heading into the season finale in Miami next month.

The event, sponsored by FirstBank Nigeria, was hailed by organisers as a major milestone in Nigeria’s growing profile as a destination for world-class sporting events.

The winners were also welcomed on stage as the song ‘Stand Up for the Champion’ played and the crowd cheered in celebration.

Looking ahead, the E1 World Championship season will conclude in Miami on 8 November 2025, with qualifying on 7 November.
