E1 Lagos GP: Food, fun and fan energy as FirstBank powers day 1

Firstbank-sponsored E1 GP

Day one of the E1 Lagos Grand Prix brought colour, excitement and Lagos flair to the city’s waterfront as fans turned up in their numbers to witness the start of Africa’s first-ever electric powerboat race.

While the opening ceremony had taken place a day earlier on Friday, Saturday’s event officially kicked off the races and it was more than just a sporting experience. With FirstBank leading as one of the major sponsors, the atmosphere was a blend of sport, lifestyle and culture.

The waterfront came alive as the electric-powered RaceBird boats glided across the lagoon in the world’s first electric powerboat championship held in Africa. Onshore, fans soaked in the atmosphere with food, games and music turning the venue into a carnival of energy and excitement.

The “Lagos Market” and another pop-up market opened early, offering a variety of dishes and snacks that gave guests a true taste of the city. Visitors tucked into jollof rice, fried rice, Chicken, porridge and small chops while sipping on Guinness, Coke, juice and bottled water. The scent of food mixed with the sounds of the lagoon, creating a festive atmosphere that blended global sport with local flavour.

While the races continued, the MC kept the energy high, moving through the crowd to ask trivia questions like “Who’s your favourite team?” and “Who were the top two for the first race?”.

A highlight of the day was a fun game that rewarded one lucky fan with a chance to take a photo with Ivorian football legend Didier Drogba, one of the celebrity guests at the event.

As fans enjoyed their meals, a panel session was held featuring Adebukola Agbaminoja, Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Film and Video Censors Board and Osahon Akpata, CEO at Cannex Creation.

The discussion focused on how sports shape culture and community in Africa.

FirstBank, one of the most visible sponsors of the event, reaffirmed its commitment through a public statement that read, “The E1 Series brings the world’s first electric powerboat championship to Africa, and FirstBank is a proud sponsor of this iconic event.”

The bank’s involvement highlights its ongoing support for initiatives that promote innovation, sustainability, and community engagement.

When the day’s races wrapped up, the DJ took over, spinning Afrobeat and dance anthems that had fans on their feet.
