Entertainers including Don Jazzy, Bisola Aiyeola, Ini Edo and D’banj have paid a courtesy visit to the board chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Idris Olorunimbe.

Videos from the visit surfaced online on Friday, showing the entertainers engaging the NCC leadership on issues around communication and the digital space.

Speaking during the meeting, Olorunimbe stressed the importance of the communications sector to Nigeria’s future.

“Communication is– in my opinion. And I don’t say this to make the NCC team feel more important than they are. But I think that in terms of where we are as a country and where we want to go, the NCC is the most important regulator. We are the central nervous system of the future of Nigeria. This industry is a critical part of the future of Nigeria. “

He also urged public figures to be mindful of how their online content shapes perceptions about the country.

“Be more restrained when we want to criticize our country. You guys think that your voices are low, but when the investments are coming to Nigeria, what you post on Instagram, on Twitter, what you repost, forms a part of research on Nigerian economy. And it is what decides if that capital will come here or go somewhere else.”

During the discussion, Bisola raised concerns about online harassment and fake news, asking what steps could be taken to identify and sanction anonymous offenders.

“I have found out that many of these people are faceless. In Nigeria… If you want to open a bank account, they ask for your NIN. If you want a sim card you will have to use your NIN. Is there a way that we can make these individuals scapegoats? Just so we can curb out fake news. There are a lot of fake news. And you know bad news spreads like feathers. People absorb bad news spreads faster than good news. So is there a way we can curb that? How can we trace this people? How can we sanction them? It’s not just about us now, because it has a ripple effect even for the younger generation.”

Other entertainers present included Slimcase, Lojay, Chigul, TY Mix, Jimmie and Director Pink.

Olorunimbe was appointed chairman of the NCC board in 2024 by President Bola Tinubu. He is also the founder of The Temple Management Company (TMC), a firm that operates in talent management and the wider entertainment industry.
