Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju has taken a swipe at Labour Party former vice-presidential candidate and founder of Baze University, Datti Baba-Ahmed, for sending his son to school abroad despite owning one of Nigeria’s most expensive private universities.
The criticism follows the circulation of a photo online showing Datti Baba-Ahmed with his son, who recently graduated from Queen Mary University in London.
The image has sparked debate about political elites and their commitment to the Nigerian education system.
Lawyer Adeyanju, who graduated from Baze University in 2022 with a first-class degree in Law, questioned the consistency of Baba-Ahmed’s advocacy for a “New Nigeria” while opting for foreign education for his own child.
“A New Nigeria is possible, took his kid to the UK for education when he had an extremely expensive and good private university. They don’t believe in Nigeria, but they have their audience,” Adeyanju said.
Baze University is known for its high tuition fees, with students paying between N2.7 million and N4.5 million per session depending on their course of study.
The institution has produced several high-profile graduates including former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, ex-Aviation Minister Osita Chidoka and former Senator Dino Melaye.
