Actress Dayo Amusa has declared her intention to take legal action against a content creator who falsely claimed she is HIV positive.

In a video posted on Saturday, the 41-year-old expressed outrage over the misinformation, stating that she had in fact shared her HIV-negative status in the past to encourage fans to know their health status.

“A few years ago, I did an HIV test, which came out negative, and I posted it to encourage my fans to get theirs done. Some days ago, a content creator posted it on his page that I am HIV positive,” she said.

“By now, he knows what he is going through because I will not let this slide. Why do content creators and bloggers post unverified information?

“I have families and friends who read all these lies. He will be my scapegoat and serve as a lesson to others. I am HIV negative.”

The mother of one said the misinformation has had a psychological impact not only on her but also on her loved ones.

Reacting to the backlash, the content creator identified simply as Segun explained in a follow-up post that the error stemmed from a list given to him by a new assistant.

He said: “It was the new assistant I hired recently that gave me the list of the celebrities that have HIV. I never said Dayo Amusa had HIV, I said she publicly discussed her HIV status. I didn’t even know who Dayo Amusa was, it was a honest mistake that I had apologized for and I took down the video. If you have not made an error before, judge me.”

Dayo Amusa joins a growing list of Nigerian celebrities who have recently spoken out or taken legal steps against defamatory content, especially from social media influencers and online blogs.
