Singer Davido on Thursday showed up at Times Square in New York to support Nigerian chess player, Tunde Onakoya, who is seeking to surpass the Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon.

The 30-year-old who recently sold out the iconic New York’s Madison Square Garden, graced the event to give moral support to his fellow Nigerian.

In videos making the rounds on social media, the singer and the excited chess master could be seen hugging and dancing.

Another Nigerian singer, Adekunle Gold had earlier supported the chess master when he visited the venue on Wednesday and made donations to assist in the live streaming of the event.

On Thursday morning, Mr Onakoya who is targeting a 58-hour long marathon play on the chess board announced he has crossed the 16-hour mark; meaning he has 42 hours more to go.

The 58-hour marathon kicked off on Wednesday at 10 am and is scheduled to conclude on April 19 at 8 pm.

Onakoya announced his attempt on his X account on April 5.

“Doing this for the dreams of millions of children across Africa without access to education,” he posted.

The current record stands at 56 hours, 9 minutes, and 37 seconds, set by Hallvard Haug Flatebø and Sjur Ferkingstad of Norway in November 2018.
