Ogun State governor Dapo Abiodun has presented Sports Utility Vehicles to chairmen of the 20 local government areas in the state.
The presentation took place in Abeokuta on Thursday.
The governor said the gesture was in fulfilment of a pledge and aimed at facilitating effective governance at the grassroots.
Speaking through the commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs, Ganiyu Hamzat, Governor Abiodun said the vehicles would support the chairmen in carrying out their responsibilities more efficiently.
He commended them for their efforts in delivering development at the local government level.
The governor also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to working closely with the local governments to improve the welfare and quality of life of residents across the state.
Responding on behalf of the chairmen, the chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, Ogun State chapter, Afolasade Adeyemo, described the presentation as a welcome development.
She thanked the governor for fulfilling his pledge.
Mrs Adeyemo, who is also the chairman of Odeda Local Government Area, spoke on the state government’s performance in sectors such as education, housing, healthcare and road infrastructure.
She said the local government chairmen would continue to work with the state government to support development efforts in Ogun State.
“The vehicles would enhance our capacity to reach rural communities and effectively address the aspirations and needs of the people at the grassroots,” the ALGON chairman said.
