Anabela Rungo, the mother of Miss Universe Nigeria 2024 and former Miss SA finalist Chidimma Adetshina, has had parts of her bail conditions relaxed by the Cape Town Magistrates Court as she continues to battle charges of identity theft and immigration fraud.
Rungo, a Mozambican national, appeared in court on Wednesday, May 14, where her legal team successfully argued for more lenient bail terms.
The magistrate ruled that Rungo, who has been under house arrest since February, may now leave her home but must observe a 9pm curfew. She is also permitted to attend other legal proceedings outside of her own case.
The 53-year-old was arrested earlier this year after her South African ID was revoked in September 2024.
Authorities allege she fraudulently obtained citizenship by stealing the identity of a South African woman, a crime that reportedly dates back to 2001.
The Department of Home Affairs has since labelled her a “prohibited person” and barred her from applying for permanent residency while the case remains open.
Her court appearance on Wednesday followed a brief postponement last week after the state appointed a new prosecutor and Rungo hired new legal counsel. The case was adjourned to allow both sides time to prepare.
Independent immigration lawyer Stefanie Darbandi, speaking on the matter, highlighted the complexity of Rungo’s legal battles.
“The courts are dealing with her fraud matter, while Home Affairs is responsible for addressing her immigration status,” she explained.
She added that although Home Affairs accuses Rungo of securing identity documents and a passport through fraudulent means, the fact that Rungo agreed to the investigation could work in her favour.
If convicted, Rungo could face imprisonment and deportation to Mozambique.
Her daughter’s fame has placed a spotlight on the case, with public opinion divided. While some critics believe the justice system is going too easy on her, others have called for empathy, citing the impact on her family.
Rungo is expected back in court on September 12.
