A magistrate court in the Sagamu area of Ogun State has adjourned the trial of Adeniyi Kayode to February 25.

Mr Kayode, a 46-year-old driver, is standing trial over a road accident that led to the death of Anthony Joshua’s personal trainer, Latif Ayodele and strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami.

The defendant was arraigned on January 2 before the Sagamu magistrate court, with Olufunilayo Somefun presiding.

He is facing a four-count charge, including dangerous driving causing death, contrary to Section 5(1) of the Federal Highway Act, Cap F: 135, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, as applicable in Ogun State.

Other charges include reckless and negligent driving, contrary to Section 6(1) of the Act; driving without due care and attention, causing bodily harm and damage to property, contrary to Section 7(1) and driving without a valid national driver’s licence, contrary to Section 10(1) of the Federal Highway Act.

When the matter came up for hearing on Tuesday, the prosecution counsel, Nijiwe Richard, applied for an adjournment to enable the duplication of the case file for transmission to the office of the Ogun State Attorney General through the Department of Public Prosecution for legal advice.

The defence counsel, Abiodun Olalekan, opposed the application, stating that the defence was ready to proceed with the case.

In her ruling, the magistrate granted the prosecution’s request and adjourned the matter to February 25 for further hearing.

The court also granted the defendant bail in the sum of N5,000,000 with two sureties.

The accident occurred on December 29, 2025, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, when their Lexus SUV collided with a stationary truck.

Joshua and the driver sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital.

Joshua was later discharged after being certified fit to continue his recovery at home.

He later visited a funeral home in Lagos with his mother to pay his respects as preparations were made to repatriate the bodies of Ayodele and Ghami to the United Kingdom.

The remains of both men were flown to the UK, where a funeral prayer service was held on January 4 at the London Central Mosque.
