Cobhams changed my life, Omawumi opens up on career breakthrough

Singer Omawumi has revealed how her encounter with award-winning producer Cobhams Asuquo became a turning point in her music career.

In an interview with Hip TV, the mother of two said meeting Cobhams changed the course of her life for good.

“The first time we met, he just called. I knew we met on the show, and he said, ‘Omawumi, this is Cobhams Asuquo-you know he likes to funkify his name. There is a song I want you to do. It might not come out as anything for now, but let’s just go with it,’” she recalled.

Omawumi said she accepted the offer, not knowing it would become a career-defining moment.

“I did the song, and then the agency picked it. I became the brand ambassador for that product for two years. Cobhams taught me a lot of nuances when it comes to delivery and posture,” she added.

The ‘Bottom Belle’ crooner, who rose to fame after finishing as runner-up on Idols West Africa in 2007, described Cobhams as one of the few people who believed in her potential early in her career.

The singer revealed that her collaboration with Cobhams opened several doors for her, including endorsement opportunities and future projects.

Cobhams Asuquo, known for his work with Asa, Timi Dakolo, Waje and Banky W, has produced several of Omawumi’s hit songs and remains one of the respected figures in Nigerian music production.
