Channels Television cameraman Kani Ben has been buried in Kangling, Girei Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
Mr. Ben was born on May 28, 1982 and died on February 15 at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital in Bauchi State.
He died nine days after sustaining spinal cord injuries in a road accident.
The crash occurred on February 6 along the Yashi–Yelwan Duguri Road in Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State.
The journalists were covering the inspection and commissioning of projects executed by the North East Development Commission.
Fourteen people were involved in the accident, including 13 journalists from various media organisations.
Ben was the only fatality.
The delegation had earlier handed over a Government Secondary School project in Yelwan Duguri to the Bauchi State Government.
The team was led by the Minister of State for Regional Development Uba Ahmadu and accompanied by the Bauchi State Deputy Governor Auwal Jatau.
The convoy was en route to commission the Bara Bridge, which links Bauchi and Gombe states, when the accident occurred.
The injured journalists were taken to Yelwan Duguri Hospital and later transferred to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital and Bauchi Specialist Hospital for treatment.
Governor Bala Mohammed visited the injured journalists at the teaching hospital and directed that they receive medical attention.
During a condolence visit to Ben’s residence in Bauchi, the governor approved N13 million as support for the family and burial.
According to him, N3 million was approved for burial arrangements, while N10 million was set aside for the family’s upkeep.
He also approved automatic employment for Ben’s widow, Sarah, into the Bauchi State Civil Service.
The Bauchi State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists announced Ben’s death in a statement signed by its Council Secretary, Isah Gadau and suspended its congress scheduled for February 16.
Governor Mohammed said the cameraman died in active service and confirmed the dismissal of the bus driver, citing reckless driving as the cause of the accident.
Kani Ben is survived by his wife and two children.
