Burna Boy opens up on settling rift with AKA before death

Grammy-winning singer Burna Boy has said he and late South African rapper AKA resolved their long standing feud privately before AKA was killed in 2023.

Burna Boy made this known in a birthday tribute to the rapper shared on Instagram. Reflecting on their past disagreements, he said the issues between them had been settled through private conversations, although this was not known publicly.

“Happy birthday Supa Mega. We fell out over bullsh*t even though we squashed it over Twitter DMs nobody knew about, we never got the chance to really link up and do what we were supposed to do. I will regret that until I see you again. Until then, R.I.P Mega,” Burna Boy wrote.

The pair had a public fallout in 2019 following tensions linked to xenophobic attacks in South Africa. At the time, exchanges on social media escalated the disagreement, with Burna Boy strongly criticising AKA over posts he believed were insensitive.

According to Burna Boy, the dispute was later resolved privately, but they never had the opportunity to meet or work together before AKA’s death.

AKA, whose real name was Kiernan Forbes, was shot dead outside a restaurant in Durban on February 10, 2023. His killing sparked widespread reactions across Africa and beyond, with tributes pouring in from artists, fans and industry figures.
