Becoming a mother forced me to sit still, Seyi Shay reflects on life at 40

Singer Seyi Shay shared a personal message on her birthday, reflecting on her life, growth, and time away from the music scene.

Posting on Instagram on Sunday, Shay wrote about her journey to age 40, calling life “turbulent, loud, beautiful, painful, victorious, and humbling.” She acknowledged her successes and mistakes, saying, “I’ve won awards. I’ve travelled the world. I’ve sang for many thousands on some of the biggest stages.” She also admitted to flaws, noting, “I know some people have experienced me as rude, stubborn, or difficult. With reflection, I can now see where they were right.”

Shay reflected on her recent years away from the spotlight, a period of self-discovery and personal growth. “The last few years away from the industry, becoming a mother, forced me to sit still. To look inward,” she said. She described herself as “softer, more tender, more aware.”

She highlighted the role of motherhood, calling her daughter her “greatest teacher.” The child, she said, has taught her patience, kindness, love, generosity, and how “to truly be present.” Shay described her daughter as “the real MVP,” a reminder that “there is always a second chance…always tomorrow.”

Shay also thanked her fans, friends, and family for their support. “To my fans who stayed, waited, believed, and never left, thank you. To my friends and family, thank you for loving me through every version of myself. And to anyone I’ve ever hurt or offended, knowingly or unknowingly, I am truly sorry,” she wrote.

Her message closed with a toast to growth and new beginnings: “Here’s to a new chapter, a new phase, and a deeper version of me. Happy birthday to me.”

Seyi Shay rose to fame with hits like ‘Right Now,’ ‘Yolo Yolo,’ and ‘Gimme Love’ and has performed on major stages across Africa. She welcomed her first child in 2022.
